Chapter Eighteen

Timothy sat and graded papers during lunch. On Fridays, he would try to have all of his papers graded so he could devote his weekends to church. This Sunday would mark five months since Timothy had taken over Gethsemane, and April first was less than a week away. Timothy knew he had to double his efforts for the church to survive the increase in rent.

He managed to get halfway through his third period’s essays before Emerald walked in his classroom with a sandwich and a bottle of water in her hands.

“Hey, babe.” Emerald placed the sandwich and water next to Timothy’s Bible and gave him a kiss on the lips. “Long day?”

“Something like that.” Timothy continued to grade papers.

“Listen, there’s something I need to talk to you about.” Emerald set her purse down on top of Timothy’s desk.

“Okay, what is it?” Timothy asked.

“The board has called for an emergency meeting on Saturday morning.”

“Saturday?”

“Yeah, I’m going to be honest with you. I think they’re going to have you removed as pastor.”

Timothy stood up and began to pace with his hands in his pocket. “I can’t say that I’m shocked, but the way they’re going about it is wrong.”

“I know it is. I found out from another member.”

“Everyone on that board was apprehensive about voting me in as pastor. I guess since the loss in membership, they have more than enough reason to remove me.” Timothy rubbed his head.

“Don’t sit there and feel sorry for yourself.”

“Oh, I didn’t say I was quitting. If they want me gone, then they’re going to have to say it to my face.” Timothy paced. “They better be prepared for a fight, because I’m not about to forfeit my destiny.”

Emerald started to look around.

“What’s wrong?” her husband asked.

“I’m on the lookout for my husband. Quick, kiss me before he comes back.”

Timothy laughed and kissed Emerald. “What would I do without you?”

“I’m your helpmate. That’s what I’m here for,” Emerald said.
